White beaches with crystal clear water, fantastic fresh tropical fruit and juices (and drinks, of course!) intact sea life and corals, beautiful sunsets - Belize looks just like advertised. It was the destination for our (Sarah and me) first “real vacation”.

Belize 2008

After a six hour flight, a very friendly taxi driver and an hour long wait in the blazingly hot harbor of Belize City, we were on our way to Ambergris Cay in a small, bumpy speed boat. We hadn’t booked a hotel in advance, but found the beautiful Banana Beach Resort, a couple of minutes outside of the busy center of San Pedro.

While it was our plan to relax, and do absolutely nothing for a week - we ended up exploring the island every day. Unforgettable the rental of

a golf cart (there are hardly any cars on Ambergris Caye), with which we explored the outskirts of the island. We spotted a Crocodile, and returned after sundown with more than 40 mosquito bites... We had to wait a couple of days for our luck to go snorkeling at the reef 2 miles from the island. With the wet season

approaching, the winds were strong, and the water often too agitated to see fish and corals. One afternoon, we even rented a small sailing boat. It was quite an experience to be exposed to the elements of wind and water! Unforgettable also the flight back to the main land at the end of our vacation. To see the crystal clear water, the reef and the various little

islands from the birds-eye perspective of a 12 seater plane was amazing. To see the pictures larger, just click on one of the previews below.
